1972 BMW 2002

Original, matching numbers sports sedan.

The Iconic BMW 2002:

This is one of the most fun-to-drive and yet affordable classic cars available today. If you think about the price point for a moment, try to make a list of cars priced at $20,000 that are as fun to drive as this car, and are appreciating in value. Done yet? Then let’s move forward.

This 1972 BMW 2002 features its original matching numbers  100 hp, 1,990 cc OHC inline four-cylinder engine, its original four-speed manual synchromesh transmission, an independent front suspension with coil springs, McPherson struts, anti-roll bar, telescopic dampers, independent rear suspension with coil springs, semi-trailing arms, anti-roll bar, and telescopic dampers, and hydraulic front disc and rear drum brakes.

Without question, the 2002 is considered the definitive small sports sedan. While the miniature and cartoonish Isetta is thought to have saved BMW, the 2002 is regarded as the vehicle that defined the company, and the car that started the “sport sedan” movement that would propel it into the future. The success of the BMW 2002 cannot be understated, it’s a formula that is still used today by BMW - (the 2002 is regarded as the "father' of the vaunted BMW 3-series!) - and every one of their competitors.

Take a good look at this ’70s icon and it is easy to understand why the 2002 quickly became a cult favorite among enthusiasts. For a generation of drivers who lusted after both performance and practicality, the 2002 is the ultimate driving machine.

The Details:

According to BMW Mobile Tradition, this particular car was originally delivered to the US to Hoffman Motors’ west coast facility and bought by a Vancouver, BC resident. After a few years in Vancouver, the car came to the east coast with its owner who relocated to Greenwich, Ct. After accumulating typical parking lot dings and normal wear and tear blemishes, approximately 10 years ago the car was sympathetically taken down to bare metal and treated to a professional re-paint in its factory original Atlantik blue, a color rarely seen on these cars. Complimented by tan upholstery, full loop tan carpeting, brilliant stainless steel trim and crystal clear glass, this car struts its stuff with an air of elegance, poise and the confidence of over 40 years of automotive reverence. Having clicked off just 72,000 miles since rolling off the factory floor, the car runs out, stops and handles extremely nicely with no odd noises, no smoke or any other abnormalities. The underside of the car is extremely clean with no signs of any rot or any other concerns. The shock towers are rust free and rock solid, as are the rockers. Tasteful and period correct upgrades include beautiful ATS wheels (and 4 brand new tires) and a front air dam. Topping off the driver’s experience is a genuine Moto Lita steering wheel. This car also comes with the original factory steel wheels and stainless steel hubcaps, the original steering wheel, and a few miscellaneous spares…..all in excellent condition. Everything works as it should, but keep in mind that this is a 43-year old car that is driven with some regularity. As such, there are a few acquired blemishes; there are a few small paint blisters in the usual places for these cars, a few cracks in the dashboard, and the blower motor speed switch works in low and medium speed but not high speed. In short; this is not an over-the-top restoration. What this is, is a driver’s car, a car that is used for what it was designed to deliver: the thrill of sporty driving within the limits of your local roadways. A car that you can press hard without having to ask a friend to bail you out of jail.
