The Story:

For kids growing up in the 1980s, there were certain posters which were a compulsory bedroom decoration feature for anyone with a pulse; the iconic Lamborghini Countach, the Ferrari Testarossa, and a Porsche 911 with the instantly recognizable Turbo “whaletail." It’s quite astonishing that the Porsche Turbo ever got built in the mid 1970s, given the economic climate in Germany and the oil crisis here in the States. These were hardly ideal climate conditions for the birth of a thirsty, elite, expensive supercar. But thanks to Ernst Fuhrmann, who refused to succumb to the pressures, the Turbo project would come alive, and continue to improve on the platform well into and throughout the 1980s. Deemed too great a car to risk on the US consumer base, these beasts were made available only to the European market, whose thirst for superlative sporting cars is unwavering. So for a while, US enthusiasts could only look to the gray market for a Turbo.

This car is one such example. (United States DOT records show that this car was imported new by RMS Leasing thru Newark, NJ on 4-25-84.) This stunning Guards Red 930/911 Turbo is a 1984 model, having been driven just under 35,000 miles since new. This is not a typo! This is a factory original, unrestored, pampered low-mileage virgin. Its 3.2-litre blown flat six yields 330hp in a car weighing just under 2,900 pounds. The official stats say 0-60 in a tick under five seconds, with a top speed just the other side of an unheard of 160mph. For the era, these numbers are epic, king of the hill type numbers! Even today, these numbers are reserved for cars in the 6-figure dollar range. The unmistakable shape of the fender flares coupled with the just-right sized headlights and curvaceously sculpted coachwork make it hard to believe that this car was not designed in a small smokey wooden-floored studio somewhere in the hidden mountain valleys of Italy. Both muscular and sultry, it is without a doubt one of the most recognizable and gorgeous automobiles of all time. It is further enhanced by the factory-original body-color optioned Fuchs wheels and set off by the mother of all rear spoilers to let you know that this car, although smooth and sexy, is all business. Although a relatively small car, the car’s cockpit feels airy and spacious, not at all cramped. There's plenty of legroom, even for athletically built six-plus-footers, and you sit very upright, with a commanding sight over one of the most iconic views in motoring, enhanced by the fat curves of the front fender wings and of course the rear view across the massive rear deck spoiler. The car lights off instantly at the turn of the key and settles into a relatively quiet burbling idle with just enough bass tone.

Below 3000rpm, the car feels like most other normally aspirated 911’s of the era in terms of throttle response; nice and crisp, and easily managed. At 3500rpm, you begin to feel the turbo spooling up and the lion awakening as the boost gauge swings into life. By 4,000rpm the turbo is in full concerto and the acceleration goes ballistic. The key to ultimate enjoyment of this powerplant is to be brave and use the entire range of rpm. The sextet of cylinders enjoy singing chorus in alto, resulting in propulsion that is still considered frighteningly fast, and a sound that is as unmistakable as it is intoxicating. The brakes are equally fabulous and up to the task. The pedal is firm but the action linear and precise, and outright stopping power is pretty impressive. Of the three King Kong supercars of the 1980s noted above, the Porsche offers two things that the others do not: practicality and price-point.

The Porsche is a car that you can jump in and actually use every day. It has spacious storage space for whatever your hauling needs are, be it groceries, golf bags for you and your buddies, or office supplies. It even has two back seats for additional passengers! And of course the price tag. It also does all of this without screaming LOOK AT ME! (OK, I guess this is more than two things!) But just take a look at where the Testarossa and Countach prices are today and where they are trending. Do I need to say more about the value here? OK I will: this is a gorgeous near-flawless example of a low mileage unrestored collector quality investment grade Porsche Turbo that you can use and enjoy for decades while watching your investment gain in value. It’s a poster-boy for a generation. It’s a game-changing automotive icon. It’s a car that’s on every enthusiast’s bucket list. Don’t let this one slip through your hands!
